Entering Day 2 of the 5A East Regionals, five Pioneers were fighting to get into the Top 4 and solidify a spot at the Class 5A State Tournament next week.  After the Consolation Quarterfinals, all five Pioneers were still in the hunt, with four collecting wins in the first round of the day:

  • Ben Marks (135) picked up a Tech. Fall victory with a barrage of action on his feet
  • Reed Clanahan (145) made good on a cradle for a Fall
  • Tyler Pate (171) made the most of several scrambles in a 5-point decision win
  • Earl Sparrow (215) finished out the round for the Pioneers with a Fall by way of a chicken wing in the 2nd Period

With tough match-ups at all five weights, it turned into a very exciting, tough round for the Stillwater wrestlers.  At 135 lbs., Marks headed into the final period tied 0-0, and with an aggressive attempt in the top position, the final 10 seconds decided the match. With 10 seconds left, Marks tied up an arm bar and turned Justin Oktay for what appeared to be a 2-count, but in the process Oktay was able to get separation and escaped with 2 seconds left in the match for a 1-0 victory.  Marks followed up this match with a hard fought 13-5 major decision win to claim 5th place.  Marks finished his prep career with Stillwater as a 4-year starting, collecting 60 wins over his tenure in the Blue & Gold.

Clanahan was the next to be up for the Pioneers, but Clanahan ran into Chase Smallwood for the 2nd time, falling 7-1.  Clanahan followed up a 3rd period fall for 5th place and finished off his Freshman season with a 19-18 record.

Pate and Sparrow followed up with much of the same result as they both fell short in the Consolation Semi-finals, but they were able to follow up with a strong performance for a 5th place finish.

Walker rounded out the morning round with a solid 5-1 decision win over Andrew Zumwalde of Tulsa Union.  That win qualified him for the State Tournament and put him into the 3rd Place match against Aaron Evenson of Broken Arrow.
