In what may be a preview of the State Championships in late February, Stillwater, Ponca City, and Muskogee were battling it out to see who would take home the team trophy. At this year's Big 4+4, it was the Stillwater Pioneers taking home the team title.
The victory was a total team effort as the Pioneers collected 42 wins over the two-day tournament. In the end, there were 7 Pioneers that reached the medal stand.
The sole Pioneer in the consolation finals was Troy Weatherford (140), who finished third. The other six Pioneers were all in the Championship Finals. They included Ky Corley (119), Chad Ravannack (125), Lance Thompson (135), Jeff Slaughter (145), Chris Perry (160), and Walker Clarke (171).
Picking up titles for the Pioneers were Corley, Slaughter, Perry, and Clarke, with Ravannack and Thompson collecting silver medals.
The Pioneers needed every point as they edged the 2-time defending State Champion Ponca City Wildcats by only 1/2 point. Look for Corley, Ravannack, Thompson, Slaughter, Perry, and Clarke to be right in the midst of the state championship race.
All six Pioneer placers have combined for 142 total wins, which includes 75 falls, 6 tech. falls, and 16 major decisions.
Info About Big 4+4 Champions:
Ky Corley (119) improved to 26-2 on the season with 5 wins at the Big 4+4 Tourney. Ky met up with Trison Graham of Ark City, KS, in a tournament final for the third time this year, and just like previous two gold medal matches, Corley came up with a solid performance to win the tournament.
Jeff Slaughter (145) showed that he's a legitimate contender for the 145lb. state title as he controlled a match-up with the #2-ranked wrestler in Class 5A, Tanner Shelton (Ponca City), on his way to a major decision. With 5 wins, Jeff moved to 28-4 and now shares the team lead in number of pins with Lance Thompson at 21 falls a piece. After his dominating performance in Perry this weekend, Jeff should move up to #2 in the state.
Chris Perry (160) has made a huge impact on the Oklahoma High School scene as he improved this weekend to 28-0, with only 5 matches going the full 6 minutes. On his way to the Big 4+4 Tournament title, Chris pinned all four of his opponents, increasing his season total to 20 falls. This outstanding freshman has established himself as the #1 160lber in the state.
Walker Clarke (171) has already experienced two state championship matches and looks to be on his way to his third. Walker maintained his spot at the top of Class 5A with 5 wins, two of which were over #4 Josh Fansler of Ponca City. Walker is still undefeated on the season with a record of 27-0.
